Chandigarh, August 25

The foul smell emanating from the Dadu Majra dumping ground has increased due to the rainy season and is troubling the residents living near the waste plant.

During a FOSWAC (Federation of Sectors Welfare Association Chandigarh) executeve meeting, Dr KS Chaudhry from Sector 38 (West) said, “The MC Commissioner had promised to remove the mountain of garbage at Dadu Majra, but no action has been taken so far. The stench from the dumping yard is unbearable and the rain has made the situation worse.”

“Besides, it’s also posing as a health hazard to the residents. The planning of putting up an incineration plant to dispose of dead animals will add fuel to the fire at the same vicinity,” he said.

MC officials said they would hire a company that would process the waste lying in the open. However, the work seemed to be going on a slow pace.

Baljinder Singh Bittu, chairman, FOSWAC, said, “It’s not the problem of Dadu Majra alone. With every gust of wind, the entire city has to bear with the foul smell. There should be proper system to process the waste.”

“The corporation is only concerned about putting tax burden on the residents. No responsibility is fixed for wasteful expenditure. The taxpayers’ money is being wasted in a ruthless manner,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, FOSWAC members also slammed the MC for a large number of vendors occupying the city.
