Patriotic fervour and reverence for freedom fighters pervaded the Randhwa auditorium as the Theatre House Group, supported by Haryana Kala Parishad, staged a Punjabi play 'Ram Mohammad Singh Azad' this evening.
Staged many times as 'nukkad natak' form, the play graduated to its new avtar as a full-length socially relevant play written by playwright CS Sindra and designed by Gaurav Sharma. It brought alive the unique saga of patriotism and self-esteem displayed by the valiant martyr Udham Singh under the direction of Nitu Sharma. Guarav and Rajiv Mehta had staged its two performances in London earlier.
The play chronicled the life and patriotic journey of a humble sewadar, Udho, who as a child prodigy, watched the massacre of innocent persons after General Michael O'Dyer opened fire at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on the auspicious day of Baisakhi in 1919 and made a resolve to avenge these unprovoked heinous killing.
The play touched upon the divide and rule policy of the British. Shavinder Singh played protagonist Udham Singh, alias Ram Mohammad Singh Azad. Besides Yogesh Arora, Rajiv Mehta embellished their roles as also Sunny Gill, Rinku Jain, Jasvir Kumar, Manpreet, Vinod and others.
