The Haryana Urdu Akademi, engaged in promotion of Urdu language and literature presented annual awards to distinguished litterateurs. The akademi director Dr Chander disclosed that since Urdu ghazal is an important genre of Urdu Adab, the ‘Ghazal Sarayi’ awards were bestowed on Dr Rinku Kalia and RD Kailey for the year 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively for their achievements in ghazal singing realm.
The awards were presented by Satya Dev Narayan Arya, Governor, Haryana.
Credited with double honour of being Panjab University topper in MA sociology as well as the PU Best Singer award in 1994. In 1997, Dr Rinku was crowned as a winner of Zee TV’s highest-rated reality show “Sa Re Ga Ma” and winner of Zee Alpha Punjabi’s “Sa Re Ga Ma”.
She was honoured by the Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2003 and the Haryana Punjabi Sahit Akademi in 2008. Holding doctorate in social science and post graduation in music, Dr Rinku is associate professor at SD College, Chandigarh.
Former General Manger of Punjab National Bank, RD Kailey holds post graduation degree in English literature from Panjab University. He had been learning classical and light music from eminent Ustads. An A grade artist of the All India Radio in Sugam Sangeet, Kailey had performed in UK, Malaysia and other countries. A versatile composer and vocalist he has seven albums to his credit besides scores of performances at top venues. — OC
