Fatehgarh Sahib, October 25
Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib Municipal Council president Sher Singh has alleged that no development works have been initiated by the council since the Capt Amarinder Singh’s Government has taken over.
He said the projects initiated during the previous SAD-BJP regime had also come to a standstill as the council, despite having crores of rupees in its bank accounts, had stopped payments to contractors since two years.
He alleged that there was nobody to redress the grievances of the residents as every officer was trying for transfer from here due to unnecessary harassment by local MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra and his wife.
The SAD-BJP has the support of nine councillors, while the Congress has 12 councillors in its support and is still short of numbers for no-confidence motion in the 21-member House.
He said all roads leading to Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib were in a bad condition and poor maintenance of drainage system had led to overflowing of sewage water, causing great inconvience to residents. Not only this, heaps of garbage could be seen at every nook and corner of the town as the sweepers had gone on strike due to non-payment of salaries, he said.
The unplanned installation of electricity poles on the main road had also added woes to the of commuters, he said.
When contacted, executive officer Ashok Pathria said all major posts such as assistant municipal engineer, SDO, accountant and inspectors were lying vacant. “I have written to the sewerage board to start the construction of pucca roads, where sewer pipes have been laid.”
However, MLA Kuljit Nagra said various development works had been initiated and the sewerage work would be completed soon.
