Ropar, August 13

Hundreds of acres of standing crops were inundated in several villages due to the rising water of the Sarsa river in Ropar on Monday.

Due to heavy rains in the region, particularly in Himachal Pradesh, the “khuds” of Lotan, Charan Ganga and Sarsa river are in spate, which has led to the flooding of fields and houses in rural areas.

Ropar Deputy Commissioner Sumeet Jarangal has asked the Revenue Department to visit the area to verify losses suffered by the residents.

Ropar Tehsildar Navdeep Singh who visited the affected villages said the Sarsa river water inundated paddy and maize fields of Majari, Kot Balah, Ranjitpura, Aaspur and Sarsa Nangal villages in the morning.

The tehsildar said the water started receding by the afternoon. The exact loss to the crops would be known only after the water completely recedes from the fields, he added.

According to reports, a link road at Raipur Sahni village was washed away, cutting the village’s connection with the rest of the area. — TNS
