SGGS Club win State Junior title

CHANDIGARH:Sri Guru Gobind Singh (SGGS) Club, Sector 26, won the Chandigarh State Junior Hockey Championship by defeating Chandigarh Hockey Academy (CHA), Sector 42, in a tie-break in the final at the Sector 42 Sports Complex today.

Chandigarh, August 29

Sri Guru Gobind Singh (SGGS) Club, Sector 26, won the Chandigarh State Junior Hockey Championship by defeating Chandigarh Hockey Academy (CHA), Sector 42, in a tie-break in the final at the Sector 42 Sports Complex today.

The SGGS lads drew the first blood in the 24th minute when Harpreet successfully converted the first penalty corner of the match. However, CHA pulled off the equaliser when Amritpal's shot found the back of the net in the 33rd minute.

Just four minute later, the CHA lads claimed the lead through another field goal by Raman. The SGGS boys tried hard to find a comeback goal, and they achieved success in the 51st minute through the stick of Jaspreet.

The score remained unchanged till the final whistle, after which the SGGS lads won the title on penalties. Rock Rovers Club, meanwhile, claimed the third position by registering a 4-2 win over Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 42. The Sector 42 team was the first to score, in the 18th minute, when Prabhjot converted a penalty corner to put his side 1-0 up. However, Dapinder cancelled the lead with a fine effort in the 21st minute. Prabhjot once again converted a penalty corner for the Sector 42 team in the 35th minute to make it 2-1, but Dapinder responded with another goal in the 37th minute to make it 2-2. After that Ankit scored two goals (41st, 58th minutes) to ensure an 4-2 win for Rock Rovers Club.

Hockey Chandigarh celebrated the National Sports Day by distributing kits to upcoming players. KK Yadav, Secretary Sports, awarded the winners. —TNS
