Punjab president, Shiv Sena, (Bal Thackrey) Harish Singla, along with a couple of other activists, were detained on Saturday morning, ahead of the state-level function to commemorate death anniversary of former Army Chief General Arun S Vaidya, the man behind the Operation Bluestar.

Punjab president Shiv Sena (Bal Thackrey) Harish Singla was under house arrest at his residence on Arorian Street, in Arya Samaj area in the morning at around 6 . Thereafter, around 11 in the morning, he was detained and taken to Kotwali Police Station, as a preventive measure.

Harish Singla, along with his supporters, was planning to organise a state-level function to observe death anniversary of the former army chief Vaidya. In the wake of the said function, Harish Singla had, already, gone to different parts of the state to invite the attendees for today’s event at Patiala.

Notably, the Blue Star operator General S Vaidya got settled at Pune in Maharashtra, after he had retired from the army. On 10 August 1986, he was shot dead by two assailants of Khalistan Commando Force.

Harish Singla claimed that a score of unknown people had ripped off the poster of former Army Chief Vaidya in the city – last week. While talking to the Tribune, he said, “We have been organising the state-level function to commemorate death anniversary of AS Vaidya since long, but it was for the first time that such an opposition has taken place. Even in the SAD regime, the function was never stalled.” Following the detainment, the supporters of Singla had gathered outside the police station and protested against the arrest.

In the meanwhile, Station House Officer Kotwali said, “We had detained them only to avoid any untoward incident in the city. It was a preventive step to detain Harish Singla and few of his supporters.”
