Shuttlers Garima, Anushrav shine

Garima Singh of the Coaching Centre, Sector 38 Sports Complex, was declared the best player in the women’s category while Anushrav Garg of TSBA was named the best in the men’s category on the concluding day of the Rs 2 lakh Chandigarh State Badminton Championship, organised by Chandigarh Badminton Association, here today.

Garima won four titles while Garg bagged three. In the women’s singles final, top seed Garima recorded a comeback 19-21 21-18 21-12 win over second seed Ishita. Garima and Ishita teamed up to win the women’s doubles title by defeating Arpita Malik and Nisha 21-14 21-10.

Garima also won the girls’ U-19 final by recording an easy 21-10 21-11 win over Rashi Vashisht. In doubles final of the same age-group, Garima and Arpita defeated Mili Verma and Vrinda Rana 21-12 21-16.

Top seed Garg won the boys’ U-19 final by defeating Dhruv Bansal 21-18 21-17. In the boys’ U-19 doubles category, Garg and Rishabh Rai defeated Dhruv Bansal and Gurbaksh Saini 21-18 21-13. In the mixed doubles U-19 final, Garg and Naina Trehan overpowered Sanyam and Arpita Malik 21-11 21-15.

Rakshita Pahwa won the girls’ U-13 title by defeating Jasmeet 16-21 21-9 21-13, while top seed Krishna Sharma won the boys’ U-13 title by registering an easy 21-13 21-11 victory over Aryaman Dhull. Shagunpreet Kaur stunned top seed Samreen Kaur Sandhu 21-9 21-16 to win the girls’ U-15 title. Top seed Samarveer won the boys’ U-15 title by defeating second seed Piyush Chauhan 21-18 21-7. Mili Verma defeated Naina Trehan 21-17 21-12 to win the girls’ U-17 title and Dhruv Bansal won the boys’ U-17 title by defeating Gurbaksh Saini 21-11 21-12.

A total of 21 finals were played on the last day and all the medallists were awarded with trophies and cash awards. JM Balamurugan, Principal Secretary to Governor Punjab, along with Tejdeep Singh Saini (Director Sports), awarded the winners. 

Arjuna Awardee and former national champion Kawal Thakur Singh, former national champion and international player Wing Commander Satish Bhatia, Surinder Mahajan (National Coach and Secretary CBA) and Col Raj Parmar (Senior Vice President CBA) were also present at the concluding ceremony. Over 400 players participated in this championship.

Girls' doubles U-17: Mili Verma/Vrinda Rana bt Jasmine Rawat/Naina Trehan 21-13 21-12

Mixed Doubles U-17: Harshit/Jasmine Rawat bt Jayan Garg/Shagunpreet Kaur 21-18 21-15

Boys' doubles U-17: Jayan Garg/Udayveer bt Hasil Tiwari/Ytharth Madaan 21-18 23-21

Mixed doubled U-19: Anushrav Garg/Naina Trehan bt Sanyam/Arpita Malik 21-11 21-15

Men: Abhishek Saini bt Talwinder Singh 21-15 21-16
