Arjun Babuta of Jalalabad in Fazilka district of Punjab has won a silver with a final round score of 249 and a qualification score of 623.9 in the Junior men’s 10m Air Rifle of the 27th Meeting of Shooting Hopes, a renowned international competition for future stars, held at Plzen, Czech Republic.
The 17-year-old lost out to eventual gold medallist Evgeniy Ishchenko of Russia by half a point in the final. However, Babuta beat 2016 Baku World Cup Gold medallist and home favourite Filip Nepejchal in the finals.
Son of Neeraj Babuta, a Commercial Inspector (Railways) posted at Ferozepur, Babuta won the gold at the Indore School National Games in 2015, setting a world record of 394 out of 400 points. He is the winner of the national shooting events in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Babuta, a student of BA-I (Honours) at DAV College, Chandigarh, shifted from Jalalabad six years ago to pursue a career in shooting.
Arjun also won the bronze medal in the ISSF Junior World Cup at Gabala, Azerbaijan in September 2016.
He shot a score of 183.6 in the final before being eliminated by Czech Republic's Filip Nepejchal (206.1).
