Taking a step towards making the city plastic-free, the Administration has proposed to ban all plastic products that can only be used one time.

The Department of Environment has issued a draft notification and sought objections from people in 60 days before publishing the final notification.

Plastic water bottles of less than 500 ml in size will also be banned. The Administration has taken the step on the directions of the National Green Tribunal, which has directed the UT to submit the action plan on systematic disposal of plastic waste to the Central Pollution Control Board.

Sources said whoever failed to comply with the directions issued by the Department of Environment would be punishable with imprisonment for a term that may extend to five years.
