Smog delayed at least five flights at the Chandigarh international airport in Mohali today. Sources said due to poor visibility, flights from Delhi and Srinagar got delayed by at least one hour. The worst affected were the afternoon flights.
The affected flights included the GoAir Delhi-Chandigarh-Delhi flight, which was delayed by an hour, the SpiceJet Delhi-Chandigarh-Srinagar flight, delayed by an hour and a half, the Vistara Delhi-Chandigarh-Delhi flight, delayed by an hour and a half, the SpiceJet Srinagar-Chandigarh-Delhi flight, delayed by an hour and 10 minutes and the Jet Airways Delhi-Chandigarh-Delhi flight, delayed by an hour and 20 minutes.
As many as 14 flights to and from Delhi have already been cancelled due to the repair of a runway at the Delhi airport for three days.
Airfares still high
The airfares from Chandigarh to Delhi for Thursday afternoon flights have touched the roof. While the rates of air tickets in morning flights are near normal, the tickets for the afternoon flights are available between Rs 9,000 and Rs 30,000, over three times the normal rates. “Those who can afford are preferring air travel to road travel due to smog,” said Pankaj Sharma, a local travel agent.
