The motorists getting challaned for traffic violations in the city won’t have to visit the Traffic Lines in Sector 29 and stand for hours as the UT traffic police is soon going to introduce on-the-spot payment of fine for compoundable offences like helmetless riding and wrong parking.

The police are also going to introduce e-payment of fine for traffic violation information slip (TVIS) challans, which are sent on violator’s postal address.

In the UT, motorists don’t find it hard to shell out challan money but visiting the challaning branch to pay it as one has to stand in queue for hours.

To deal with the issue and end the inconvenience faced by the visitors the traffic police will soon start accepting traffic fine on the spot. The move will end the rush witnessed at challan counters. SSP (Traffic) Shashank

Anand said, “We will be accepting cashless mode of payment at the spot for compoundable offences.”

Cops will need documents only if the violator cannot pay at the spot.

The offences, including drunken driving, red light jumping, driving while talking on mobile phone and speeding, which come under the category of non-compoundable offences, will not have the option of payment at the spot since the police have to seize the driving licence of the driver, which is further recommended to the court for suspension.

Talking about the online payment of challans, the SSP said initially, the option would be available for postal challans. Later, it would be extended to all compoundable challans, in case the offender was not able to pay the fine at the spot, he added.

Challan is sent to the offender by post after the violation is caught on CCTV cameras installed at the intersections or if the pictures of violation are received by traffic sentinels through social media, including WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter. The police official said for non-compoundable challans, which were forwarded to the court, they were considering returning the documents by Speed Post upon final adjudication, on the offender’s address.

Cops to be armed with e-challan devices

All cops will have e-challan devices. These devices have inbuilt facility for making online payment. The devices will also produce the history of challans pertaining to the offending vehicle along with their payment status. The UT police have already procured 25 e-challaning devices.
