In yet another case of reckless driving, a 35-year-old motorcyclist was killed when a Range Rover, that was allegedly racing with a Toyota Fortuner, hit an Alto car, crossed over the divider and rammed into a motorcycle coming from the opposite side on the road separating Sector 48 and 49 last night.

An eyewitness claimed that the white Range Rover, bearing a Chandigarh number and heading towards Mohali, was racing with a Fortuner when its driver lost control over the vehicle and hit an Alto car, which was being driven by Shailender, a resident of Phase X, Mohali.

The Alto overturned after which the Range Rover hit a pole, crossed the divider and hit a motorcycle coming from Mohali.

The police said the Range Rover also overturned and dragged the victim for at least 100 metres. Sources said the victim was stuck under the Range Rover.

The Range Rover driver managed to escape from the spot after the incident in the Fortuner. The motorcyclist, who was identified as Aman Rajwanta (28), a native of Kotkapura in Faridkot district, was rushed to the PGI where doctors declared him brought dead. The victim worked at a call centre in Mohali and was staying in Sector 22, Chandigarh. He was returning from work when the accident took place.

The Alto driver also suffered injuries. However, his condition is stable.

The police traced the owner of the Range Rover and identified him as Chamkaur Singh Virk (29), son of a transporter. The vehicle is registered on an address in Sector 22.

Inspector Jaswinder Kaur, SHO of the Sector 49 police station, said the vehicle was being driven by Chamkaur Singh, who escaped from the spot after the incident. He was arrested later and released on bail.

The sources said the victim was unmarried and is survived by his parents and a sister, who is married. The victim’s father is a doctor. The victim was planning to move abroad and was preparing for it.
