Start biomedical engineering courses in India, says expert

Patiala-born renowned biomedical engineer Vijay Goel said there was a need to start biomedical undergraduate courses in India. Goel, an alumnui of Thapar University was in the city to attend a high-level meeting to commence the course at Thapar University.

Goel held parleys with Prakash Gopalan, director, Thapar University, and faculty members. He said a delegation from Thapar University would visit University of Toledo, Ohio, USA, on June 3 and 4.

Goel, who works as a Co-Director Engineering Centre for Orthopaedic Research Excellence at Department of BioEngineering at University of Toledo said, “I think, there is a need to start biomedical undergraduate courses in engineering colleges in India. In fact, Thapar University is planning to start the course soon.”

Dr Goel said, “At present, I am working on biomechanics of male and female sacroiliac joint, spinal imbalance biomechanics, proximal junctional kyphosis, along with incorporation of muscle forces within the existing ligamentous spinal finite element models that we have developed over the years to study the effects of spinal devices.”
