Students encouraged to pursue career in science at university

A five-day summer school of the National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) started at the Physics Department of the PU here today.

Prof Devinder Mehta, Dean, Sciences, motivated the students to be innovative and take up science as a subject in future. He shared the details of honours courses in various science subjects at the PU.

Prof Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, appreciated the efforts of NASI for running science summer schools for Class XII students.

Prof IBS Passi, president, NASI, Chandigarh Chapter, shared the details about the functioning of NASI, while Prof KN Pathak, former PU VC said this was an appreciable initiative by NASI to support students and motivate them.

More than 200 students from various schools of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are participating in the summer school. Three lectures were delivered on the first day after inauguration.

Prof Neelima R Kumar from the Zoology Department delivered an informative lecture. She talked about on the importance of honey bees, their types and life cycle.

Prof KK Bhasin, Senior Professor from the Chemistry Department told the students how to appreciate and understand chemistry.

Eminent Physicist Prof Suman Bala Beri delivered a talk on understanding the mysteries of nature and creation of universe.

The day concluded with a visit to the museums of Zoology, Geology and Anthropology Department, Botanical Garden, and Cyclotron accelerator facility at the Physics Department.
