While Internet is fast becoming a ‘basic necessity’ of people, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) broadband subscribers are struggling to make use of the service.

Subscribers from various parts of the tricity have reported Internet outage in the past one week and say it is a regular problem.

Problems have been reported from Sector 30 in Chandigarh where BSNL has its own housing society as well, Sector 20 in Panchkula and Sector 69 in Mohali. In the second half of 2017, BSNL reported multiple cable thefts in Mohali with losses pegged over Rs 10 lakh in the calendar year.

As per BSNL staff who visit these homes, the outdated infrastructure being used by BSNL is to blame. One such staffer who visits parts of Mohali to resolve these issues said: “Mostly the problem is external. The cable gets cut as it is broken”. The external cables are worst affected by bad weather and monsoons.

Daljit Singh, a resident of Sector 69, Mohali, said: “I have been using BSNL broadband for several years now and my family is used to calling complaint number every few months”.

He said the complaint is resolved soon, but the complaint number is not always reachable.

A resident of Sector 30, Chandigarh, who requested anonymity as he himself works for BSNL, said: “Problems occur mainly due to external wiring but they are resolved in less than 24 hours of the complaint being filed in most cases”.

Residents of Sector 20, Panchkula, however, say their complaints are not resolved for days on end.

BSNL Principal General Manager Telecom (PGMT), Chandigarh, JS Sahota, when contacted, said: “While I am aware of problems in our mobile phone network as two towers are faulty, there is no problem as such in our broadband. However, we will look into whatever specific complaints we have received.”
