Kharar, June 27

Un-insulated wires of various street light poles within the Kharar Municipal Council have become a major risk fo local residents specially children. This correspondent today visited Kalra Street, Randhawa Road, Janta Nagar, Dashmesh Nagar, Landran Road and Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar and found that concrete base of these street lights was broken at many places and almost at all places iron cover of junction boxes was missing. Live un-insulated wires were seen.

Surprisingly, a majority of these areas are over populated. A major incident involving human life can occur anytime due to these electric wires.

Similarly un-insulated joints of wires could be easily seen at various places especially in streets and main markets. Electric wires were seen hanging loosely at a very-low height in the Main Bazar of Kharar and can prove fatal for any vehicle driver. At some places one could easily touch these with a rod.

The maintenance of the stree tlights is done by the local municipal council. There are about 8,000 streetlight poles in Kharar municipal limits and the condition of a majority of the poles is the same.

When asked about it, Sanjeev Tiwari, Executive Officer of the Kharar Municipal Council, said he had recently joined in Kharar but he had ordered that a survey be conducted and a note about the repair of these street light poles should be prepared. He promised that necessary steps would be taken soon in this direction. According to information, there are about 47,000 electric connections in the Kharar Municipal Council and there are only 25 regular staff members to take care and solve the problems faced by the residents.

Kharar SDE Satpreet Singh Bajwa when asked about it said that they were trying their best to repair various faults with the present staff.
