Unhygienic food lands five eateries in the soup

Deputy Commissioner Mandip Singh Brar has imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 each on five restaurants for preparing and serving food  in unhygienic  conditions. 

The penalty has been  imposed for not maintaining hygienic conditions as prescribed under the rules while preparing food items. Sources said teams of health officials of the Administration checked eateries under the Food Safety and Standards Act a few months ago and submitted reports to the Deputy Commissioner, who has been empowered under the Act to take action after giving an opportunity to the  management of the eateries to present their views.

The eateries which were  fined are situated in different sectors. The first eatery to be fined was Tulip Hospitality Cafe, Sector 10-D, where the   teams found pizza, pasta and salad being prepared in unhygienic conditions. 

The second eatery to be fined was Dilli Special Paranthe Wali Gali in Sector 22. The other eateries which were  penalised were M/s GA Food  and Hospitality Services, 9-D, where also the teams found pizza, pasta and garlic bread packets being prepared in unhygienic conditions.  

The Deputy Commissioner  also imposed a fine on the  contractor of Shivalik Hostel, Punjab Engineering College, Sector 12, for preparing “chane, chapati  and bhurtha” in unhygienic conditions.

A shop in Sector 37-C — Anand Fresh Juice and Ice Cream — was also fined Rs 10,000 for keeping 10 sealed  packets of 300 gm each of substandard namkeen.

After hearing the owners’ version, the Deputy Commissioner found that there were certain shortcomings for which a penalty needed to be imposed.

One of the students at PEC  welcomed the fine and said it would prove a deterrent. He said in the absence of regular monitoring, they had been facing health-related problems due to unhygienic food.

The Deputy Commissioner also imposed a fine on the contractor of Shivalik Hostel, Punjab Engineering College, Sector 12, for preparing “chane, chapati and bhurtha” in unhygienic conditions.
