Unplanned development chokes Kharar

Unplanned development and growth of colonies have resulted in waterlogging at various places in Kharar. During the rainy season, water accumulates at various places and creates problems for local residents. Despite various claims and efforts made by the local municipal council, the position is worsening day by day.

Due to poor arrangements for water disposal, rainwater enters Government Elementary School, Jhungian; Government School, Jandpur; Government High School, Desumajra; and Government Senior Secondary School, Badala. HS Mavi, president of the Panchayat Union, Punjab, and a resident of Badala Village, said that during the rainy season the school in Badala had to be closed for a couple of days. He said the position in Badala village was also alarming as a lot of water accumulated at several places. The underbridges, constructed by the Railways on Randhawa Road, Kharar, and Badala Road, Kharar, are often filled with water whenever there is even little rain.

The problem of waterlogging can be seen near Shivalik City, Gulmohar City, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar and the Arya College road. A prominent businessman, Rajinder Aggarwal, said a nullah passing through Ram Bagh Road had been encroached upon by many person but the administration had done nothing to reclaim it. Due to this, rainwater often entered shops and residential houses, situated on Landran Road.

A dirty nullah along Landran Road was filled with garbage and silt. Recently, one side of the nullah was cleaned by the nunicipal council but the other side is yet to be cleaned. Surprisingly, in Kharar, water can be drained naturally through the Jayanti Ki Rao rivulet but no effective measure has been taken so far in this direction.

A seasonal choe, which starts from Sunny Enclave and passes through Janta Nagar nad Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, has been encroached upon and filled with garbage at many places.

The main reason of waterlogging at various places in Kharar is unplanned development of various colonies and residential areas. The administration has failed to check the level of various roads in these colonies and as a result the natural flow of water has been obstructed.

MC Executive Officer Sanjeev Tiwari said the council was taking all steps to prevent waterlogging and various nullahs had been cleaned up.
