UT Architecture Dept approves design of region’s first Sports Injury Centre

The Department of Architecture has approved the design of city’s Sports Injury Centre, which is proposed to be built on 1.6 acre, near the Government Medical Collage and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Sources said the new building for the centre would be six floors with two basement and parking facilities. From CT scan to MRI all diagnostic facilities and emergency services will be provided on the ground floor. The space for the hydrotherapy lab and physiotherapy units will be provided on the first floor while the second floor will have wards and operation theatres.

Rooms for resident doctors, the nursing staff and wards will be provided on the third floor. Wards for patients will have 16 single bedded rooms on the fourth floor. The fifth floor will have canteen and seminar rooms while the sixth floor will be reserved for the administration and guest rooms.

The project director, Dr Ravi Gupta, said, “This will be the first of its kind centre of excellence for sports injuries in the country. Here sportspersons will get treatment for all kinds of injuries. Besides, research in the field of the Sports Psychology Department will also be started to help sportspersons recover mentally from shock of the injury.”

“The total cost of the project will be around Rs 36 crore. The administration has already approved the budget for the project,” he added.

A senior officer of the administration said, “The tender for the construction of the building will be floated soon. The proposed building will follow the green building norms.”

There is only sports injury centre in the region at the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, was thrown open during the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

With the new centre coming up in Chandigarh, sportspersons of the region will get best treatment at their doorsteps.
