UT yet to decide weight limit for school bags

Chandigarh, November 26

The UT Education Department is yet to comply with orders of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) orders regarding the weight limit for school bags. The order was  issued on October 5.

The Union Ministry had instructed all states and union territories to formulate guidelines regarding the weight of school bags.

As per the instructions, students should not be asked to bring additional books, extra materials and the weight of a school bag should not exceed the prescribed limit.

On September 16, the Chandigarh Education Department had issued an advisory to school heads to comply with the Madras High Court orders. It had asked the schools not to give homework to students of Classes I and II. The schools were also told not to prescribe any other subjects except languages and mathematics for students of Classes I and II. The schools have been told to prescribe NCERT books. 

BL Sharma, Chandigarh Education Secretary, said: “We haven’t seen the orders yet.”
