Vaibhav Mehra came from behind to beat Vaibah Giri in boys’ U-13 quarterfinals on the opening day of the State Badminton Championship at the Sector 43 Sports Complex, here, on Saturday.
Mehra lost the opening game 11-21, but came back strongly to win the next two games 21-19 21-14 to move into the semifinals.
Piyush registered a comfortable 21-6 21-12 win over Dakshpreet, while Akul Malik humbled Aryaman 21-9 21-11. Krishna overcame Abhiroop in another closely contested quarterfinal.
Krishna lost the first game, but made restored the parity with a 21-7 win in the second game. He then beat Abhiroop 21-18 in the final game seal a spot in the last four.
Shagunpreet moves ahead
In the girls’ U-13 category, Shagunpreet ousted Avishi Sood 21-3 21-3 to ease in to the semifinals.
Nirmat Kaur registered a 21-9 21-5 win over Gurmannat, while Kanishka packed off Razol Bhanot 21-7 21-8 in another quarterfinal. Prachi Joshi had to dig deep to overcome Alisha.
Prachi lost the opening game 21-23, but her kept her poise to win the next two games 21-13 21-15 to stay in contention for a place in the final.
In the only quarterfinal match of the boys’ U-13 doubles competition, Aryaman and Krishna registered 21-17 23-21 win over Jayant and Uday.
Samarveer, Mili advance
Samarveer, meanwhile, eased into the boys’ U-15 semifinals after beating Ishan 21-8 21-19. Ashwini Puri drubbed Krishna 21-12 21-7, while Jayan Garg packed off Piyush 21-18 21-10 in the quarterfinals.
Arjun Praksh had an easy outing as he defeated Udaiveer 21-4 21-11 to move into the semifinals.
Mili Verma dispatched Mannat 21-9 21-11 in the girls’ U-15 quarterfinals.
Shagun edged out Tanisha 22-20 21-15 and Kanishka downed Asna 22-20 21-14. Samrin rallied to beat Tanya 16-21 21-16 21-17 in the last quarterfinal match of the group.
Dhruv, Tanya prevail
In the boys’ U-17 quarterfinals, Dhruv knocked out Hasil 21-10 21-17, while Gurbax Saini beat Aryaman 21-14 20-22 21-8. Anusharv defeated Yatharth 21-18 21-13 to move into the semifinals.
Sanyam Grover prevailed 21-14 21-14 over Samarveer in another quarterfinal contest.
Tanya Sharma eased into the girls’ U-17 semifinals after she was awarded a walkover against Varinda in the quarters.
Nimanpreet drubbed Ravinder Kaur 21-8 21-7, while Mili outplayed Asna 21-10 21-11. Arpita shunted out Jaismine 21-12 21-7.
