Vaishnavi shines on day of upsets

Maharashtra’s Vaishnavi Adkar stunned eighth seed Anjali Rathi of Haryana in straight sets to win the girls’ U-16 title on the concluding day of the CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament here on Friday. Vaishnavi won 6-4 6-2.

Anjali, though, overcame her disappointment with a convincing win over second seed Vanshika Choudhary of Uttar Pradesh in the girls’ U-18 final. The Haryana youngster won 6-2 7-6(2). 

In the semifinals, Anjali had registered a 6-3 6-1 win over Uttar Pradesh’s Hannah Nagpal, while Vanshika  overcame Punjab’s Harleen Kaur 6-4 1-6 6-1.

Eighth seed Anjali Rathi upset second Sanvi Ahluwalia 6-3 6-3 in the other semifinal.

In the boys’ U-18 category, top seed Ajay Malik lived up to his billing as he packed Chirag Duhan in straight sets to clinch the title. 

Malik won the opening set 6-3, but Duhan lifted his game and gave a tough fight to the top seed before going down 5-7 in the second set. 

He, though, clinched the boys’ U-16 title after top seed Sushant Dabas conceded the match mid-way through the opening set of the final. Duhan was leading 4-3 when Dabas quit the match.
