Punjabi University, Patiala, is all set to promote a select number of peons to the post of typists lacking efficiency in Punjabi (Unicode) typing.

The university declared the result of a typing test in Punjabi and English conducted last week and assessed the applicants for efficiency in Punjabi (Satluj) and other fonts, while it uses Punjabi (Unicode) only for all matters of communication as per Punjab Government rules.

The university conducted the test last week in which it allowed the applicants to take the Punjabi test in fonts other than standard Raavi (Unicode) font including Satluj font.

The process was questioned by university officials who said the way of conducting the test defeated the basic purpose of it as it focused on promoting experts in typing Punjabi and English as per the university and state government’s standards.

They said those who are being hired need to be experts in typing Punjabi in Unicode font along with English typing, which is as per working standards of the university and the state government.

Officials had also raised concern over conducting the test offline despite availability of special software for the purpose, previously used for assessing over 25,000 candidates of the state government that could provide the result within 30 minutes.

The university said the expertise of employees, who are being promoted on the basis of the test, will be assessed again after providing them training in Punjabi (Unicode) typing after three months.

Registrar Dr Manjit Singh Nijjar said the university is promoting the employees on the basis of the test and they will be given training for Punjabi (unicode) typing. “We will conduct another test of the employees after three months and their performance will be reviewed.”
