Verification of tenants: 21 held
Chandigarh: Twenty-one landlords have been for failing to get the tenant and servant verification done. The UT police have initiated a drive against landlords who fail to get the tenant verification done by the police. Those who fail to get the verification done are arrested and booked under Section 188 (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the IPC. The beat staff and teams from police stations have started visiting houses and shops to check whether landlords have done the needful. As many as 21 cases were registered by the police against landlords at various police stations in the city on January 9. All of them were arrested and later released on bail. TNS
One more held in irrigation scam
Mohali: Vigilance sleuths have arrested another accused in the multi-crore irrigation scam here. The accused has been identified as DS Kohli, a former Superintending Engineer with the Punjab Irrigation Department. After arresting Kohli, the police produced him before a local court, which sent him to four-day police remand. Kohli is one of the several accused, who have been booked in the case registered by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau under Sections 120-B, 406, 409, 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC and Section 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. 660 bottles of liquor seized
Kharar: The excise and taxation staff recovered 660 bottles of liquor from a Scorpio on the Kharar-Morinda road in the early hours of Thursday. Vinod Pahuja, Excise and Taxation Officer, Mohali, said on the basis of a secret information, a team of of the department, headed by Jaspreet Singh and Sarupinder Sandhu, set up a naka on the road and tried to stop the car, which was driven away. The driver of the car fled leaving the vehicle behind. During the search, 660 bottles of English liquor were recovered from the car. There was no hologram on the liquor. According to the labels on it, the liquor was manufactured by a Chandigarh unit. OC
Thieves steal Jeep battery
Mohali: Car-borne thieves took away the battery of a Mahindra Jeep from Phase 3B2 in Mohali on Wednesday night. According to vehicle owner Ranjodh Singh, he heard some noise outside his house around 2 am. “I found that three youngsters pulling out the battery of my Jeep. When I challenged them, they immediately fled in their car,” said Ranjodh Singh. He added that he dialled 100 but nobody picked the phone at the police control room. TNS
Youth jumps into Siswan waters
Kharar: A youth jumped into Siswan Dam here on Thursday. He has been identified as Karan (25), a native of Moradabad. According to information, he, along with his four to five friends, was sitting near the dam when he took of his shirt jumped into it. Currently, he was staying at Nayagaon. Mullanur Garibdass SHO Rajesh Hastir said they searched for the body but failed. He said divers from Jind would be called on Friday to recover the body. OC
Tennis c’ship from Jan 13
Chandigarh: Roots Tennis Academy, Zirakpur, will host the week-long National Ranking Championship from January 13. The tournament will be held in
U-14 and U-16 age-groups, the organisers said here on Thursday. More than 150 players from North India will participate in the competition, the organisers added. Interested players need to register for the event by tomorrow. TNS
Athletics meet from Jan 18
Chandigarh: Chandigarh Athletics Association will conduct the Chandigarh Sub-Junior, Junior & Senior State Athletic Meet at the Sector 7 Sports Complex from January 18-20, the sports body said here on Thursday. An athlete who is residing, studying or working in Chandigarh is eligible to participate in the competition, the organisers added. The interested athletes need to register for the competition before 5 pm on January 15.TNS
Cricket trials tomorrow
Mohali: Mohali Cricket Association will conduct trials to select the U-16 team on January 12 at IS Bindra PCA Stadium here. The selected team would take part in the inter-district tournament to be organised by Punjab Cricket Association for U-16 age-group. Cricketers either born, studying or living in Mohali and born on or after September 1, 2003, can participate in the trials. TNS
Wushu c’ship from tomorrow
Chandigarh: Wushu Association of Chandigarh will organise the 8th Chandigarh State Wushu Championship from January 12-13 at Panjab University. The competition will be held in sub-junior, junior and senior age-groups, the orgnisers said here on Thursday. During the event, the sports body will also select the city team for the 18th Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship, scheduled to be held at LP University, Jalandhar, from January 23-28. TNS

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Cricket Association, affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association, will organise the inaugural Sardar GS Banga Memorial U-19 Invitational Cricket Tournament from January 15. A total of eight teams --- Chandigarh Cricket Academy, Ludhiana Academy, Saravhitkari Academy (Mohali), DAV School (Sector 8) Academy, Ropar Academy, Mohali Academy, Chandigarh District Academy (Sector 16) and Champion Cricket Academy --- will participate in the championship.
