Will ensure foolproof security at Jor Mela, says IG

Fatehgarh Sahib, November 22

The district police will ensure foolproof security for devotees and VIPs and smooth flow of traffic during the Shaheedi Jor Mela, which would commence from December 26 to 28.

This was stated by the IG Ropar Range, Amit Prasad, after presiding over a meeting of the district police officials, called to make security arrangements and traffic plan. 

Shaheedi Jor Mela is major event of Sikhs commemorated in the memory of two younger Sahibjadas of Guru Gobind Singh, who were bricked alive here, for refusing to embrace Islam. Lakhs of devotees visit the historical gurdwara from all over the country and abroad.

“To ensure fool-proof security for pilgrims, mela will be divided into sectors. Each sector will be headed by an SP rank official. CCTV cameras will be installed to keep a close watch on anti-social elements,” the IG said. 

“As many as 51 nakas, nine observation posts and seven police help centres will be set up. The public should follow alternate traffic routes to avoid harassment,” the IG added.

The Faterhgarh Sahib SSP, Amneet Kondal, said, “More than 3,000 police personnel and officials along with NSS and NCC volunteers will be deployed at the mela. Twenty free parking sites have been earmarked. To maintain the smooth flow of traffic six alternative routes have been identified and traffic plan prepared.” 

“The main traffic for other cities will be diverted through link roads. No vehicle will be allowed in the mela. The district police will work round-the-clock and with dedication keeping in mind the religious importance of the Shaheedi Jor Mela and keep a close watch on anti-social elements,” the SSP added. 

SP (H) Navreet Singh Virk, SP (Investigation) Harpal Singh, SP Kanwal Preet Singh Chahal, besides Hardeep Singh, RS Kahlon, Jaswinder Tiwana and Sukhwinder Singh Chohan, all DSPs, also addressed officials present at the meeting.
