Two days after jewellery worth around Rs 8 lakh was stolen from a doctor’s house in Sector 30 along with a Hyundai Xcent car that was parked outside the house, the police today arrested two persons, including a woman, and recovered the jewellery and car from their possession. Their third accomplice is at large.

The complainant in the case, Dr Bharat Kumar, a junior resident at the GMCH, Sector 32, and his wife had gone to meet a relative at a private hospital in Mohali on May 22 when the theft took place. The thieves had left behind a stolen motorcycle in which they arrived and had driven away in the doctor’s Hyundai car.

Satish Kumar, DSP (East), said one of the thieves, Aashish Kumar, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, was arrested today from Sector 56 while driving the stolen car. The DSP said on information provided by the accused, his female friend, Babita, alias Neha, a resident of Jhujhar Nagar, Mohali, was arrested from near Maloya. “The accused had handed over the stolen jewellery to Babita so that it could be sold to some jeweller,” the DSP said.  The police said except a gold chain, all stolen jewellery  had been recovered from the woman.

The police refused to divulge the name of their third accomplice stating that raids were being conducted to nab the accused. “The laptop stolen from the doctor’s house is in the possession of the accused who is at large,” the police said.

The police said two cases of motorcycle theft were registered against Aashish in the city.
