Work on Sector 17 underpass takes off

The service lane and the main carriageway behind the RBI and the James Plaza hotel on Jan Marg from Matka Chowk to the Sector 16/17 light point will be closed from Monday due to the construction of the first phase of a pedestrian underpass between Sector 17 and Rose Garden. Work on the underpass started today. The road is expected to be closed for three months.

The construction work on the pedestrian underpass will be undertaken in two phases. It will be constructed by excavating the main carriageway and the slow carriageway on Jan Marg. The work will be undertaken by closing the road partially.

An officer of the Engineering Department said after the completion of the first phase, the road from the opposite side in the same area would be closed for three months The new underpass would allow visitors to go directly to Rose Garden without crossing Jan Marg, one of the busiest roads in the city. The underpass will cost approximately Rs 8 crore.

The underpass is being constructed near the office of the RBI. It is a part of the rejuvenation plan of Sector 17, prepared by a consultant. The plan has been prepared with an aim to develop Sector 17 as a hub of activities and city centre where residents of the city, nearby areas and tourists come and enjoy recreational activities.
