A bittersweet atmosphere enveloped the city after Yuvraj Singh announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket, making the young and the old shed a few tears and cherish the joyous moments the cricketer gave them in his 19-year-old career that had its origins from the ‘City Beautiful’. It was very sudden and unexpected and his retirement is a loss to the cricket world. Yuvraj should have retired from the ground. Legends like him deserve a proper farewell. The ICC should have done something to make his last match memorable. He is the biggest fighter who never gave up in life. He is undoubtedly a living legend. His battle with cancer and the comeback after that has always been an inspiration. His never give-up attitude will be missed. Vandana, chandigarh

Flyover will diminish city’s beauty

Chandigarh has a tag of ‘City Beautiful’. It is indeed very well planned as compared with other cities. We have seen that wherever flyover has been built the traffic has only increased. The authorities concerned should take this as a challenge and manage the traffic in such a way that there is no need of flyover. In Zirakpur, there is about 2-km long flyover, but beneath it the traffic rush is very alarming. Traffic police should be deployed at heavy rush point and they should be trained enough to manage the traffic. The authorities should widen roads instead of constructing a flyover. There is also a need to make separate lane or even road for two-wheelers. The flyover will not serve the purpose, but diminish the beauty of the ‘City Beautiful’. Gulshan Kumar

Shut unrecognised schools

Why unrecognised schools should be allowed to operate in UT when most of them don’t comply with basic laws such as building certification or land allotment or sufficient infrastructural facilities? They are just playing with the future of students. The Chandigarh Administration must come up with a solid plan to phase out such unrecognised schools. A proper survey with detailed checklist should be carried out of all such schools before initiating any action. Only the schools that fulfil the guidelines set by the Education Department should be allowed to continue operations, rest should be shut immediately. Also, no one should be allowed to mislead students to get admissions in their schools running unlawfully. Sanjay Chopra, mohali
