Young classical vocalist Kumar Gaurav Kohli enthralled the audience with his serene and soulful recital which marked the "baithak" programme organised by the Pracheen Kala Kendra at the mini auditorium of Tagore Theatre, here today.

Holding postgraduate degrees in Zoology and Music with Honours, Kumar Gaurav is an A plus grade artiste of AIR and Doordarshan.

Endowed with a resonating and soulful voice, Kumar, skipping the conventional alaap, unfolded the melodic character of popular raga Shudha Kalyan through a composition Vilambit bandish "jab hi ghar aawe" which melted into the faster composition "aa re aali aaj gavo sab mil ke" amidst thunderous applause. He doled out a bandish "Har Har Mahadev Shiv Shambhu in raga Hansdhawani concluding with "Laqagi lagan".

He interspersed his electrifying recital with spontaneous improvisations, assertive taans matching the rhythmic patterns on tabla were created by Madhuresh Bhatt and Amarjit Singh on harmonium with Seema on tanpura. — OC
