Garhshankar, June 19
Former Garhshankar MLA Shingara Ram Sahungra was today made to vacate the accommodation provided to him by the Punjab Government 24 years ago.
He had got the house in Canal Colony here in 1992 when he won the Assembly elections on the Bahujan Samaj Party ticket. Despite losing in the 1997 polls, he continued to occupy it.
Irrigation department officials, along with Subdivisional Magistrate Amarjit Singh and police personnel, reached Sahungra’s residence this morning. They removed all household items from the house and sealed it.
The ex-MLA said he was targeted as he was heading the action committee protesting against the recent canecharge on members of the Ravidasia community at Khuralgarh. Irrigation and police officials refuted the allegations.
Executive Engineer Vijay Gill said the action was taken as per law.
