A huge fire broke out at three vegetable and fruit shops in the main bazaar of Machhiwara last night.
All fruits and vegetables lying in the shops along with juice machines and a fridge were completely destroyed in the fire.
As per the information, a passerby noticed the fire in the shops and informed the shop owners following which they reached the spot. Later, the shopkeepers, Vijay Kumar, Subhash and Bablu Kumar, informed the police, who called the fire brigade.
Two fire brigade vehicles from Samrala and Khanna were roped in to dousethe flames.
Meanwhile, another China Bazaar shop close by to these shops also caught fire. But the firefighters doused the flames before it could do much damage.
However, a firefighter identified as Kulwinder Singh suffered an electric shock while controlling the fire and was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Machhiwara, where he is recovering.
Machhiwara station house officer (SHO) Amardeep Singh, when contacted, confirmed the incident and said they were enquiring the cause of fire. However, there was a possibility of sparks coming out from electric wires hanging nearby leading to the incident, the SHO added.
