792 girls getting help for education

About 792 girls were getting financial assistance under the Bebe Nanki Ladli Beti Kalyan’ Scheme launched by the Punjab Government for the educational and social empowerment of women in Fatehgarh Sahib district.
Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said the aim was to change the negative mindset of people about the birth of a girl child. He said the girls born after January 1, 2011, could benefit under the scheme.
Under the Bebe Nanki Ladli Beti Kalyan' Scheme, the government gave Rs 2,100 on the 3rd and the 6th birthday of the girl child, he said. An equal amount was given when the girl got admission to Class IX at the age of 14 years.
Her family would get Rs 31,000 when the girl got admission to Class XII at the age of 18. Girls studying in schools would get Rs 7,200 as scholarship (Rs 100 per month) from Class I to VI, Rs 14,400 (Rs 200 per month) from Class VII to XII. So, a girl gets Rs 61,000 as scholarship from the government till the age of 18 years, he said.
If a girl dropped out of school for any reason, she or her family will not be eligible for drawing any benefit under the scheme from that date.
