Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) organised an activity at its out-patient department (OPD) to strengthen public awareness on the ill-effects of tobacco in lieu of World No Tobacco Day today.
The Department of Oncology initiated a patient-education activity to mark the importance of the day. Reading material was distributed among people along with pledge forms through which 80 people pledged not to use tobacco in future.
Various posters and banners were also put up to explain people about the second-most common legalised drug— nicotine.
Dr Amit Dhiman, Head of Oncology Department, along with the Medicine Department, initiated the programme and educated people about the ill effects of tobacco on human life. He explained about different types of cancers which occur due to the use of tobacco.
Tobacco is used in different forms such as cigarettes, bidi, chewing tobacco, jarda etc.
This year on World No Tobacco Day the World Health Organisation (WHO) will urge member states to sign the protocol to eliminate the illicit trade in tobacco products.
The protocol offers the world a unique legal instrument to counter and eventually eliminate a sophisticated criminal activity.
Youth told to keep away from drugs
A rally was organised on World No-Tobacco Day by the Sandhu Cancer Centre, Udham Singh Nagar, to keep the youth away from drugs. The rally was flagged off by Dr Devinder Singh Sandhu and the principal of a government school in Sarabha Nagar, Kusum Lata. The rally started from the cancer centre and culminated at the Udham Singh Nagar park. Teachers of the school and the hospital staff also participated in the rally
