The district authorities have launched a campaign to raise awareness on the importance of driving licence and on-the-spot insurance of vehicles, particularly tractors.
Nearly 200 villagers assembled at Gajuwala village of the district today, where OP Narwal, Superintendent of Police (SP), got reflectors installed on tractors and trolleys.
It has been found that 80 per cent of tractor drivers in the state were not authorised to drive the vehicle and 90 per cent of the vehicles were not insured.
“While applying for a driving licence, villagers include motorcycle and car, leaving out tractors to avoid an additional fee of Rs 50. When an accident occurs, they try to bribe the cops,” said Narwal. He said insurance of tractors, too, was a rarity in the state.
“In some cases, the compensation awarded against tractor owners by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) was many times the value of their total land” he said.
