A classical treat for music lovers

A shy, sober yet scintillating classical vocalist, Dr Nabanita Chowdhary, lit up the 224th edition of the Baithak Concert, organised by the Pracheen Kala Kendra at their indoor auditorium here today. Born and raised in Baroda and now based in Delhi, Dr Nabanita (38), had her initial grooming under her mother-guru Jaishri Chowdhury.
She leant the finer nuances of singing from Padmabhushan Shobha Gurtu and presently Pandit Rajan Sajan Mishra of the Benares ghrana. A graded artists of AIR and Doordarshan, she has performed extensively in India and abroad, mostly in the USA, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
Endowed with a soul stirring voice, Nabanita commenced her recital with the exposition of “raga bihag” through an elaborate “alaap” before rendering “bada khayal” composition “Kaise Sukh Sove….” in “vilamabat ek tal”.
Her progression (badhat) of the raga was a treat to watch. It was followed by a “chhota khayal bandish” “Ab To Ratt Lagi” and “teen tal”. She doled out a crisp “tarana” as her next rendering. Nabanita presented a melodious “dadra in raga charukeshi” before concluding with a Ram bhajan, submerging the audience in a sea of reverence and devotion. She was accompanied by Mehmood Khan on tabla and Rakesh Sharma on harmonium. Kendra registrar and kathak guru Dr Shobha Koser honoured the artistes.
