Carnatic classical music was presented by artistes hailing from southern states at Dev Sanskriti University here today.
Being organised by cultural cell of the university, noted musician Sudha Raghuraman, who has been bestowed with Ustad Bismillah Khan Young Artiste Award, among others, displayed varied forms of classical music.
Raghuraman also churned out devotional songs in Hindustani classical form, which was applauded by all and sundry.
Carnatic classical music is mostly popular in southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu,emanating from ancient Hindu traditions.”Although there are stylistic differences, the basic elements, shruti, the relative musical pitch, swara, the musical sound of a single note, raga, the mode or melodic formula, and tala,the rhythmic cycles, form the foundation of improvisation and composition in both Carnatic and Hindustani music,”said Sudha Raghuraman.
On the occasion Vice Chancellor of Dev Sanskriti Univeristy Sharad Paridhi compared yoga and music, saying that yoga cures mentally ,physically, while classical music makes the soul pure.
“Music is one of the ways to connect with the Almighty. It also has immense positive soothing impact on our senses,” he added.
In charge of the cultural cell Dr Shiv Narayan Prasad said that music lays emphasis on purity and concentration and students should adhere to yoga and music in their daily life.
