A large number of activists from different unions and left parties gathered at Sector 17 plaza today to protest against the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, president, Students Union, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Already known for its controversial political stands on sensitive issues, the BJP government in Delhi is now reportedly harassing students of Central universities.
Addressing the rally, Prof Manjit Singh and Rajiv Godara of Swaraj Abhiyan said, “Dalit students’ protest after Rohith Vemula of Hyderabad University committed suicide had hardly cooled down that a bigger attack on students’ voice in JNU has been launched with the help of the ABVP.”
“Challenging the sedition charges slapped on Kanhaiya Kumar, president of JNU Students’ Union, the government is trying to teach us a lesson in patriotism,” said RS Bains, a high court lawyer.
Kamaljit Singh of CPI (ML) Liberation denounced the police raids on hostels at the JNU and implicating the students in false cases.
The other organisations that participated in the contest were the Communist Party of India, CPM (Punjab), CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, All-India Students’ Association, Revolutionary Youth Association, Swaraj Lehar and Taraksheel Society.
