Admn committed to senior citizens’ welfare, says DC

Deputy Commissioner Rajat Agarwal said the district administration is committed to the safety and welfare of senior citizens. He said senior citizens are guiding forces of our society and children should always respect and take proper care of them. He said for educating the senior citizens regarding the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007, block level seminars and camps will be organised in the district.

A meeting regarding implementing Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 strictly was held at the DC office, which was attended by SP Karkara, president, Federation of Senior Citizens’ Associations, Punjab, Dr Inderjit Singh, Dr Moninder Singh, District Family Welfare Officer, Kulwinder Kaur, District Social Security Officer, besides several senior officers.

He said the campaign to educate the senior citizens about their rights will be intensified in the district. He said special awareness programmes and discussions would be organised on TV channels and FM radio channels. Agarwal directed officials of Health and Family Welfare Department to make sure that special and dedicated queues and counters should be formed at all Civil Hospitals of the district.

Agarwal informed that few days back, the district administration with help of police helped a senior citizen in getting possession of his house in Jamalpur area of the city and very soon, more people will get possession of their properties. The possession was granted as per the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007. DC said pamphlets to educate the senior citizens about the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 would be distributed in the city and hoardings would be installed at all public places as well as the government offices.

For having direct interaction with the senior citizens, the district administration is meeting and providing free medical checkup every three months for senior citizens above 100 years of age. Deputy Commissioner informed that 58 such senior citizens have been identified in the district and the Punjab government is taking care of their regular medical check-up. He also asked the district social security officer to identify land where a senior citizen home can be constructed. He also asked her to get the site plan prepared and send a detailed proposal to senior officers in Chandigarh.
