The third consecutive win of star boxer Vijender Singh in the professional boxing bout at Manchester on Saturday has sparked celebrations in his native Kaluwas village.
“Viju had his Bulgarian opponent Samet Hyuseinov on the ground in less than two rounds. While we were confident of his win, his knockout punch took us by surprise,” said Vijender’s brother Manoj Kumar Beniwal.
Manoj, who was a national-level boxer, said the Beniwal family had produced over 25-30 successful boxers. They were now in reputed government jobs, but Vijender was a rare gem, he said.
Vijender’s mother Krishna Devi said, “Vijender had told me if he wins six consecutive bouts, he could challenge the world champion. I am sure the way he had knocked out his opponents in the first three matches, he will follow the suit.” She said Vijender, who had been out of the country for a while, would be coming back home in a few days to participate in a function at Panchkula.
Lauding his performance, Brish Bhan, the centre in charge of the Bhiwani Sports Authority of India, said the boxer was now prepared to claim the world boxing title.
