Mohali, March 14
The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is all set to reduce the distance between Chandigarh and the Mohali international airport by 3 km by laying a new road from Phase XI here.
The new 2-km stretch will connect the Mohali railway station road in front of Bawa White House with the newly constructed airport road near Rurka village.
At present, people have to cover a distance of around 18 km from Tribune Chowk to reach the airport in Mohali. The new road will reduce the distance to nearly 15 km.
At present, people have to go to the T-junction of the Indian School of Business (after crossing Bawa White House) from where they have to turn left to reach Airport Chowk. From the chowk, they have to again turn left towards the airport.
With the construction of the new stretch, people will not have to go to the ISB T-junction. Instead, they will have to turn left from Bawa White House on the proposed stretch, which will pass through an area near Kambala village to touch the airport road near Rurka village. It will reduce the distance by 3 km.
According to the GMADA authorities, the process to acquire land is under way and it will take around a year to complete the project.
Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, GMADA Chief Administrative AK Sinha said besides this stretch, three more roads were being constructed in developing sectors, including Sectors 78 to 109, in Mohali.
“Under the plan, over Rs 500 crore would be spent on developing road infrastructure in the area,” said Sinha.
The first 200-foot-wide road would start from Sector 78-79 and end near the railway line in Sector 109 while separating Sectors 86 and 87, 97 and 98 and 105 and 106. The length of the road would be 4 km. GMADA would construct another 200-foot-wide road from Sector 88 to Sector 101. The 3.5-km stretch would connect sectors with the Banur-Landran road and would reduce congestion.
The third 120-foot-wide road, having a length 1.5 km, would be constructed from Sector 100 to IT City, he said.
Another road opened
The GMADA authorities recently opened the much-awaited stretch connecting the airport road with the Mohali-Kharar highway. This has benefited people visiting the airport from the Kharar as well as the Zirakpur side and has reduced congestion on the road from Balongi to the Mohali bus stand.
