Congress leader and advocate Vaneet Mahajan today escaped an attack near Gopal Mandir on the Majitha road when two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons hurled an acid bottle towards him.
Mahajan was parking his car. He had a narrow escape as the bottle hit the bonnet of his vehicle. The attackers escaped towards the Gokul Nagar area.
Senior police officers reached the spot. Mahajan accused Cabinet Minister Anil Joshi of perpetrating the attack, saying the minister targeted him since he had asked the electoral officer to cancel his candidature as he did not have a vote here.
He had also filed an objection during the scrutiny of nominations. He said he was now going to file an election petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against his candidature.
“As the electoral officer has failed to take any action, I had told them that I will file an election petition on Monday. And now I am attacked,” he said, adding that he did not have animosity with anyone else. Agitated over the incident, the Amritsar Bar Association today passed a resolution of no work day and gave an ultimatum to the police to nab the culprits within 48 hours. They said in case of inaction, the lawyers all over the state would on a strike. This is the fourth attack on the advocate in the last couple of years.
