An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Tanda police station was killed allegedly with a bullet shot from his service revolver at his house under mysterious circumstances.
The victim, Gulzar Singh of Patialan village, was on medical leave for the past quite some time.
His wife Sukhwinder Kaur said her husband was recently diagnosed with cancer, for which he remained admitted to a Ludhiana hospital for three days. She said doctors discharged him on Thursday when he insisted on returning to his house. Around 7 pm yesterday, Gulzar reportedly asked his sister to leave his room saying he wanted to rest. He also asked for his service revolver while maintaining that he wanted to clean it.
His wife told the police that while he was cleaning the revolver, a bullet probably hit her husband in the head, killing him on the spot. On hearing the gunshot, the family members rushed to Gulzar’s room. They found his body lying in a pool of blood.
The police have registered a case and started inquest proceedings after recording Sukhwinder’s statement.
