An awareness workshop on cardiac congenital defects was held at Pancham Hospital. The hospital organised a special event inviting children for a free checkup.

Cardiac congenital defects are birth-time defects in the heart. These include hole in the heart (Atrial Septal Defect or ASD, Ventricular Septal Defect or VSD) or abnormal communication between two major vessels, aorta and pulmonary artery.

Dr RP Singh said: “In the past, these defects were repaired by opening the chest, leaving the child with a lifelong scar. Now, the same defects are repaired through 1mm cut through the upper part of the thigh and the child walks about just after 6 hours of the procedure.”—TNS
