Ludhiana, December 9
After the Police Department assured the family of the woman, who died at a bank yesterday, that it would press the bank authorities and the district administration for adequate compensation, the latter ended their dharna outside the Punjab National Bank branch late last night.
The body of the woman was also shifted to Civil Hospital where a post-mortem examination was conducted. The deceased, Asha Rani was cremated after post-mortem.
Paramjit Singh Goraya, ADCP, who monitored the situation yesterday, said the police initiated the inquest proceedings under section 174, CrPC, after the family agreed on it. The deceased’s relatives, along with hundreds of people, had staged a dharna near the bank that led to a massive jam on the Shingar Cinema road for more than six hours.
“We have also asked the bank authorities to provide adequate compensation to the family and they have agreed to write to the head office for the same. The Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana has also been urged to provide compensation to the family,” the ADCP added.
When asked about the cause of woman’s death, the ADCP said the exact cause would be known once the post-mortem report was released.
Bobby, a close relative of the deceased, said the protest was ended last night when the bank and the police authorities assured the family of adequate compensation. “The family has been assured by the bank officials that sufficient financial compensation would be given to them,” he added.
Asha had allegedly died outside the bank after she was pushed away by the bank guard. She was rushed to the nearby hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival.
