The 16th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment celebrated the golden jubilee of the Battle of Barki, fought during the 1965 Indo-Pak War, in the western sector today. The battle raged for five days, during which, the Indian troops captured the eastern banks of Ichhogil Canal, about 15 km from Lahore, on Khalra-Barki-Lahore axis. They lost 21 of their own, including an officer.
A number of events were held to commemorate the occasion, which included a wreath-laying ceremony at the newly renovated Barki War Memorial to pay tributes to martyrs, as well as a bara khana and pagal gymkhana for the troops. Colonel of the Punjab Regiment, Lt Gen RR Nimbhorkar, was also present on the occasion.
