Beef up security of historic temples: MP
Tribune News Service
Mandi, December 15
The Member of Parliament (MP) from Mandi, Ramswaroop Sharma, said the government should enhance the security of historic temples to avoid Kullu-like theft in future.
The MP, who was on way to Kullu on Saturday, said the police had failed to make any breakthrough in the Kullu temple heist in which a 17th century gold idol of Ragunath, the main deity of Kullu, an alloy idol of Hanuman and a Shaligram, were stolen on the intervening night of December 8 and 9.
The MP said the state had become a mute spectator to the nonstop thefts of valuables from temples in the state. He said the idols stolen from the Raghunath temple were priceless and the government should take steps to bring them back.
It could be the handiwork of an international gang, which should be exposed at the earliest, as several historic temples in Mandi, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Rampur, Chamba and other areas had valuable items with them, he added.
