Bhutia dance at Virasat festival

Singhi Chham or Kanchenzanga dance, a Bhutia dance, was the highlight of the cultural programme organized at the Virasat cultural festival here today.

The dancers performed in costumes that represent the snow lion. The dance is said to have been introduced by Chador Namgyal, the third Chogyal of Sikkim, in the 18th century. It is usually performed during the Panglapsool festival.

The Snow Lion Dance group from Tawang enchanted the audience with their Lion and Yak dance performed by Tashi-Lhamu-Bapu and her 14 group members. Tashi-Lhamu-Bapu is one of the lead actresses of Arunachal Pradesh.

Khaleel, a local saxophonist of repute, paid tribute to the legendary Hindi Movie music directors of the Golden era by playing songs on the saxophone in the evening.

Earlier, in the morning students performed at Virasat Sadhna. The students from Hope Town Girls School, Kanak Kala Kendra, Arjun School, Army Public School, Delhi Public School and Brightlands performed on classical music and dance.
