A team of doctors at the PGIMS here has set a precedent of sorts by removing a surgical blade from the stomach of a patient without performing a surgery.

The team, led by Parveen Malhotra, Head, Department of Medical Gastroenterology, removed a 5-cm surgical blade from the stomach of a patient using endoscopy. An endoscope was inserted into the patient’s stomach through the oral cavity (mouth) and with the help of it, the blade was removed.

The patient, who had reportedly swallowed the blade in an inebriated condition, was brought to the PGIMS with the complaints of pain in abdomen and vomiting.

He has been discharged from the hospital in a stable condition.
