In a crackdown on the mining mafia, officers of the Yamunanagar and Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh) district administrations got demolished a temporary bridge on the Yamuna river near Hathni Kund Barrage here today.

The bridge made of stones was used to transport mining material from the river.

“Mining is prohibited in the 1-km radius of the barrage to save it from the probable danger of flood water,” said Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner (DC) SS Phulia.

He, along with Superintendent of Police Ved Prakash, Jagadhri Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Prem Kumar, District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO) Gagandeep Singh, District Revenue Officer (DRO) Satish Bhardwaj and other officers, visited Hathni Kund Barrage and asked officers of the Irrigation Department to get a case registered against persons who had made the temporary bridge.

Phulia said the SDM and the DDPO were scouting the area for illegal mining a few days ago when they found the temporary bridge on the Yamuna. “Officers of Uttar Pradesh were informed about the bridge and asked to visit the spot today,” he said.

The DC said he had formed five teams to stop illegal mining in the district recently.

Mining has been banned in Haryana for several years. The mining mafia of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, however, continue to mine the area.
